I did my best to “narrate” the pictures…
Here’s the “nitty gritty” tho…
At 25,000 miles I refreshed my entire drivetrain. Rebuilt the engine with a shaved/ported head, solid hub underdrive pulley, shaved flywheel, nice heavy pressure plate and 6 puck ceramic clutch, upgraded my “new” phantom grip to green springs (had red in for about 3000 miles before I put the stiffer ones in), and put in the “diff saver pin” also from phantom grip. I was stoked and it performed very nicely. The Phantom Grip still left something to be desired…but it was WORLDS better than an open diff.
Well I crossed 50,000 miles just 2 weeks ago…I was thinking about how things have gone since the rebuild.
SPEC clutch blew apart…had to re peen the sprung hub…and the high tension SPEC pressure plate did some work to my thrust bearing.
Solid hub crank pulley (after eating the mains and causing low oil pressure there) assisted the pressure plate in causing immense crank walk (something I’m dealing with now) and ate away at my oil pump (as evidenced by brass flakes in the oil when I removed the damn thing).
Only thing that was still working in some regard was the Phantom Grip…well today…that came to an end. The PG had been exerting lateral force on the diff pin…slowly wearing through it…and in the end…causing a catastrophic failure…but with many neat pics to accompany the disaster.
So…just like sprung hub clutches with grippy material…or solid hub pulleys…STAY AWAY from the Phantom Grip.
There’s a saying that when you work late and start early you are “burning the candle from both ends.” Well with 5 weeks to go till school starts, a full time job, 3 cars that don’t run, a few welding projects to finish, and 2 more cycling races…I’m gonna be burning the candle from 3 ends.
